Jury shown crime scene photos in third Oxley trial

The jury in the third trial of Wayne Oxley got to see graphic crime scene photos of the brutal 2005 murder of Bernard Trickey Jr. The pictures were of the body that was bloodied by a baseball bat. A forensic expert said there was an extraordinary amount of blood spatter and that the killer was left handed. Oxley said on the stand that he was right-handed due to being blind in his left eye. However, earlier testimony from youth baseball teammates stated that Oxley was left-handed. Trickey’s father was in the court room, but turned away when the pictures were shown.

"Three Strikes" DWI law proposed

State lawmakers are putting together a proposal that could make a "Three Strikes" rule for driving while intoxicated offenders. The legislation would forever suspend the driving privileges of anyone thrice convicted of DWI or driving under the influence if the accidents cause injuries. The bill is being proposed by Republican Assemblyman James Tedisco and State Senator Hugh Farley. Currently there is no provision to permanently revoke a driver’s license even after chronic drunken driving.

Time Warner and MSG come to deal to end blackout

Time Warner Cable and MSG came to an agreement last night after a long standoff. The network disappeared from the cable system on January 1st. The deal came just in time for viewers to see the tip off of the New York Knicks game against the New Orleans Hornets on MSG and the Buffalo Sabres versus the Montreal Canadiens on MSG Plus. Viewers will also be able to see the NHL Eastern Conference leading New York Rangers, the New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders now that the two sides have reached a deal. Music channel Fuse is also back on the air. Governor Andrew Cuomo and Attorney General Eric Schniederman also praised that the blackout is over.

Jefferson County Sheriff's get new police dog

There is a new member of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department. His name is Lobo and he will be a narcotics dog after his training is completed. Authorities were able to purchase the new the 14 month old German Sheppard after getting a $6,500 dollar grant. His training will take several months and his expected to be certified in September. He will be handled by Deputy jeff Froelisch.

St. Lawrence County officals upset with state late fee

St. Lawrence County officials are not pleased with New York State after the county was charged with a late fee even though the state owes the county millions of dollars. Due to a cash crunch, County Treasurer Kevin Felt was a day late making an over $6 million payment to the state retirement fund. The state penalized the county over $1,2000 or 7.5%. The notice didn’t sit well with the county, who is owed over $7 million in reimbursements. County officials are trying to ask State Senator Patty Ritchie to get the penalty reduced or waived.

Copenhagen man charged with criminal mischief

Lewis County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Copenhagen man for criminal mischief in the third degree. Thirty-four year old Chad Mayne is alleged to have kicked in a door on the River Road in Copenhagen on Thursday. The incident caused damage to the door and the door casing. Mayne taken to the Lewis County Jail and issued an appearance ticket for the Town of Denmark Court.

Crash In Southern Jefferson County

A section of State Rt. 3 in the Town of Ellisburg was shut down for a period of time this morning following a motor vehicle accident. The crash occurred before 7 am. It's not known how many vehicles were involved. Initial reports stated the accident was with a personal injury and entrapment. The road was closed for about a half hour.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced an agreement on a new statewide teacher evaluation system. Cuomo, state education leaders and state teachers union officials say the agreement will make the state "a national leader in holding teachers accountable for student achievement." Under the agreement, teachers will be scored on a scale of one to 100, with 60 points available for teacher performance and 40 points scored regarding student achievement in state and local assessment tests.

Jail Inmate Caught With Contraband

An inmate of the Jefferson County Jail has been charged with having prison contraband. Sheriff's deputies say 34 year old Gary Collins was in possession of several items he was not allowed to have, including matches and tobacco. Collins was also allegedly in possession of marijuana while in his cell. Police were alerted to the items after it got the attention of a narcotics K9. Collins was arrested last summer in the Town of Alexandria for allegedly beating a dog to death with a claw hammer.

Owens Calls For Halt In Postal Shutdowns

North Country Congressman Bill Owens is asking the U.S. Postal Service to slow down the process of closing facilities across the country. Owens says there should be a moratorium on closure studies to allow for several problems with the process be resolved. Recently, the Postal Regulatory Commission found several major flaws with the plan of the Postal Service. About 3600 post offices and 250 mail processing centers are set to be closed, with about 38 rural offices in the North Country on the closure list. The postal service issued a moratorium on the actual closures through May. The moratorium however only affects the actual closure of facilities and allows closure studies to continue.

The investigation continues into a weekend brawl involving a state lawmaker at a Niagara Falls casino. Police now say they've found no "credible evidence" that State Senator Mark Grisanti used racist language against a black security guard following last Friday's scuffle at the Seneca Niagara Casino. Grisanti has said he and his wife were jumped after he tried to break up an argument between two men. A prominent Seneca businessman has claimed he heard Grisanti use racist language during the melee.

Hospice Opens New Home To Public

Hospice of Jefferson County will be opening the door's of it's brand new residential facility today. An open house for the new location on Gotham St. is planned. The organization moved into the new building last month and is getting it ready to admit patients. The purpose of the home will be to allow those on Hospice who can't receive home care a place to stay, as well as their family members. The first residents of the new facility are expected to be admitted in the next few weeks. Today's open house will be from 2-7 pm at 1398 Gotham St. here in Watertown.

Oxley Takes Stand

Despite the advise of his attorney, Wayne Oxley took the stand Wednesday in his murder trial in St. Lawrence County. Oxley is accused of beating Bernard Trickey Jr. to death with a baseball bat in Ogdensburg back in August 2005. Oxley denied killing Trickey, telling the court that he was doing drugs and drinking the night of the murder. Oxley continued to maintain his innocence under cross examination. Oxley has pinned the murder on neighbor John Shannon, who later died himself in an intentionally set fire several weeks after Trickey's death. The defense rested and the trial is expected to resume on Friday.

A local car dealership will be moving into some new digs today. Davidson Ford will fully relocate today to it's brand new facility on Route 11 in the Town of Watertown. Construction on the new facility began last fall and officials with Davidson say the construction ran ahead of schedule. Owner Dwight Davidson is also touting the green energy features of the new building, which include the use of solar panels. Next to the new facility is the construction of the new Davidson GM building. Plans are for that to open by late spring.

A federal bankruptcy judge has approved a plan to allow the Rochester-based company to receive 925-million dollars in loans from Citicorp to keep the company afloat as it goes through bankruptcy proceedings. Investigators in St. Lawrence County say there is no indication that last Friday's fire at SUNY Canton was an intentional or criminal act. Canton Fire Chief Michael Dalton says the fire at Cook Hall began in a Chemistry Prep room and storage area. It was determined that the fire spread rabidly as a result of a chemical reaction, and that the use of smoking materials and appliances have been eliminated a sources. No serious injuries were reported from the fire. The blaze shut down the campus. SUNY Canton President Joe Kennedy says the college is still awaiting lab results to determine how quickly they can reopen buildings surrounding Cook Hall.

Lewis County Sheriff's Deputies have charged a Castorland man with stealing items from a Lowville business last fall. Thirty two year old Timmy Smith is charged with third degree burglary and petit larceny. It's alleged that Smith forcibly entered Yancey's Sales and Service on Rt. 12 in the Town of Lowville back on November 15 and took three chainsaws valued at over 2 thousand dollars. He is also accused of stealing a chainsaw from a residence in the Town of Denmark. Smith is free after posting $500 cash bail.

City Hires Consultant In Manager Search

The Watertown City Council Monday night voted to hire a former local city manager to help in the search for a new manager for Watertown. Former Ogdensburg City Manager John Krol will come with a fee of $10,000. His duties will include writing up the help wanted ad for the manager's position and acting as a liaison between the council and applicants. City Mayor Jeff Graham facilitated the hiring of Krol, citing his local ties and independence from city politics. Voting against the measure were Council members Jeff Smith and Joe Butler Jr. who said the council should be doing most of the work in the search. The council voted last month not to renew the contract of current city manager Mary Corriveau. Corriveau announced last week she will retire and step down April 28.

How do residents in Lewis County feel about their quality of life? The answers to that question are found in a new study. The Center for Community Studies at JCC has released the results of the latest survey conducted among county residents. The 5th Annual Lewis County Survey of the Community was conducted by phone last October with over 400 phone calls made to residents of the county. Seventy three percent of respondents cited satisfaction with with overall quality of life. Residents were most satisfied with quality of the environment, quality of public education, recreational opportunities, crime, and overall quality of life. They were most dissatisfied with shopping, real estate taxes, state of the local economy, and the lack of good jobs.

A Copenhagen woman was seriously injured following a one vehicle accident that occurred Monday morning in Jefferson County. State Police say 19 year old Cassandra Hodge was traveling on County Route 163 in the Town of Champion at around 6:45 am when she failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway, lost control, and struck a tree. She was airlifted to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse for head injuries. She was last listed in critical condition. The investigation into the accident is continuing.

He likely doesn't know any marital arts, but Ninja is the new name of the mountain lion kitten at the New York State Zoo at Thompson Park. Ninja was the top name in a recent Facebook poll for the zoo, garnering 566 votes. The name was among five finalists chosen by zoo staff. The name suggestion was submitted by Kindergarten students on Ft. Drum. Over the next couple of months, the zoo will be preparing Ninja for exhibit.

Snowmobile Crash In Lewis County

One person was injured and a second is facing charges following a snowmobile accident that occurred over the weekend in Lewis County. Sheriff's Deputies say 39 year old Daniel Letiecq of Sandy Creek was on the Olin Rd. in the Town of Montague early Sunday morning when he lost control of his sled, and overturned. Letiecq was able to drive to a local business and call for help. He was airlifted to a Syracuse hospital for head and chest injuries and was last listed in fair condition. Meanwhile, a second sledder who was traveling with Letiecq, 53 year old James Kearney of Syracuse was charged with snowmobiling while intoxicated and refusal of a breath screening devise. He was arraigned and ordered held in Lewis County jail. The investigation is continuing.

Soldier's Returning Home

An additional 140 soldiers are now home at Ft. Drum. The second contingent of soldiers from the 3rd Brigade Combat Team's ongoing redeployment arrived to the North Country Sunday evening. The soldiers are wrapping up a 12 month mission in Afghanistan. Last night's welcome home ceremony was held at the Magrath Sports Complex. The "torch party" of the brigade arrived last week. The returns will continue over the course of the next several weeks, with a total of 3500 soldiers expected to arrive once completed.

The wife of a New York state Senator is recovering from an alleged beating at the Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls. Authorities say Maria Grisanti, wife of state Senator Mark Grisanti suffered a concussion and facial bruising after she was allegedly attacked by two women Friday night. Investigators say Mark Grisanti tried to break up a fight between two men but was punched several times. His wife was then allegedly beaten by two women also involved in the argument. Police are reviewing surveillance video.

SUNY Canton Cancels Classes Next Week After Science Lab Fire

The blaze started at just before noon at Cook Hall; the building and two nearby residence halls were evacuated and the campus was put on a lock-down for about 90 minutes. Boonville Man Facing Felony Forgery Charge

An investigation by the Lewis County Sheriff's Department has led to the arrest of a Boonville man on a felony forgery charge. Robert Marmon Jr., 52, was found to have forged an entry on his pistol permit to include a handgun he purchased out of state, then illegally returned to New York. Marmon was charged with one count of felony forgery and was released on his own recognizance to await possible grand jury action. Mr. Marmon voluntarily surrendered all of his handguns to local police pending disposition of his case.

A Lowville woman is facing several charges after an early morning traffic stop today. Jacklyn Hardy, 32, was stopped by Lewis County Sheriff's Deputies on a license plate check, where it was learned she was driving with a suspended registration. It was also learned that Hardy had been doing a little bit of drinking when officers detected a strong odor of alcohol. Hardy registered a .12 blood alcohol content level. She was charged with driving while intoxicated, operating with a suspended license and aggravated unlicensed operation in the third.

Army officials say WikiLeaks suspect Bradley Manning will be formally charged on February 23 at Fort Meade in Maryland. It's considered one of the most serious intelligence breaches in U.S. history. Manning could receive a life prison sentence if convicted at his court martial. Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputies allege Monaghan caused $392 in damage to the mattress of Sharon Hughes when he entered her bedroom January 22 and set fire to it while she was asleep. He also allegedly threatened to snap her neck. Currently there is no word on whether Hughes was injured during the incident. Monaghan is to appear February 23 in Wilna Court to answer to the charges.

One person is dead following a multi-vehicle accident that occurred last night on State Rt. 11 in the Town of Philadelphia. State Police say it was a chain reaction crash that began just before 5 pm when a vehicle driven by 23 year old Kyle Simard of Watertown went into the other lane, striking a tractor trailer operated by Terry Mouthorp of Madrid. As a result of that collision, the tractor trailer collided with a third vehicle, driven by 40 year old Jae Molner of Adams Center, who was killed. Simard's vehicle then collided with a fourth vehicle driven by Phillip Hughes of Antwerp. A fifth vehicle, driven by William Carr of Herman took evasive action and struck the guard rails. Three of the operators were taken to local hospitals to be treated for non life threatening injuries. Simard was ticketed for failure to keep right. Investigators say driver inattention on the part of Simard was a contributing factor in the accident.

State Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a one vehicle accident that left a Jefferson County man dead. At around 7 am Monday morning in the Town of Brownville, Captain Darrin Pitkin with the New York State Police found a car approximately 20 feet off the shoulder of County Route 53, also known as the Military Rd. and in a wooded area. The driver has been identified as 53 year old Albert Buker of Glen Park, who was found several feet away from the vehicle. Investigators believe the vehicle was traveling north several hours earlier and went off the right shoulder of the road. Buker is believed to have overcorrected, causing the vehicle to then slide sideways off the road, striking a tree and ejecting him.

The first batch of soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division' 3rd Brigade Combat Team are now home. A ceremony was held Thursday evening at Ft. Drum for the soldiers. Once the redeployment is completed, about 3500 soldiers will have returned home.

Three local police officers have been cleared of any wrong doing in the shooting death of a woman outside of the Stewart's Shop on Washington St. in Watertown last summer. A grand jury report has found that two members of the Watertown Police Department and a Jefferson County Sheriff's deputy were justified in firing the shots that killed 50 year old Laura Petty of Dexter outside the store back on August 27. Petty aimed what appeared to have been a pistol at police that evening and police fired. The weapon turned out to be a pellet gun. The report stated that Petty had made suicidal comments leading up the shooting.

State Police have arrested a Winthrop man in connection to the death of a 21 year old man who was reported missing two years ago. Dustin Trimm has been charged with second degree murder. It stems in connection with the apparent death of Jason Wing of Ft. Covington. Remains were found along a road in Norfolk Thursday. While they have yet to be positively identified, they are believed to be those of Wing, who was reported missing by his family in August 2010. Officials allege that Trimm shot and killed Wing and buried his body. Trimm, a registered level 2 sex offender, is being held without bail.
